ok heres a really dumb question what is Google [Bot]? see it quite often when on the forum as a viewer,yeah come on someone take the piss out of me cos it is something simple other than me

It's google, cacheing the page. So if it goes down people can see the snapshot.

Google uses automated "bots" or "spyders" (a group of computers (kinda like the Transformers without the guns and robot bits)) to canvas the WWW and take a snapshot(a copy of the html code) of each page, as part of keeping their search engine up to date. They hold that snapshot in their own data storage cache, and when the site requested via their search engine is unavailable for any reason you can link to their snapshot of the page, and still see whats on it. Doesn't really work for a forum, you can't post to it, but can read the messages. Some times the snapshot is only a few minutes old, sometimes its hours or even days old. They tend to cache forums a more regular intervals, because they're updated often with people posting. But your average site for example www.companies.govt.nz would only have its snapshot taken maybe once a week as it is not updated as often. They also don't tend to store large files like pictures.

infact there is alot of bots out there, All search engines have them, MSNbot is another regular to the site.
