This info is by hamishnz08 This can be used on a normal computer, or more ideally, on a server system. You will need a fast internet connection, at least 64KBPS; upload speed. Before you start: You will need an firewall and anti virus. I use ESET Smart Security, but whatever you use, you will need to setup the firewall to interactive mode; as in where is asks you to allow outgoing or incoming connections. You can put your firewall back to automatic mode after a few days of the FTP software being setup. For the software, we will download a free application called "Golden FTP Server", there are other applications available but I find Golden FTP Server the easiest to use. The address for this software is: http://www.goldenftpserver.com/ There also is a paid version of this software but the free one does what you will want it to. Download and install this software. You will now have a desktop shortcut to it; on your desktop. Restart you computer. Once your computer has restarted you will see in the bottom, right hand corner you will see an icon; with two arrows, golden in colour, one is going up and one down. This is the software you have just installed. Double click this icon or the desktop icon. Now, if you want to share files via FTP, click 'add' and direct the software to where the location of the file(s) is. Select this and click OK. The Golden FTP Server software will now give you a location of the files. This is an internal address not an external address. Write down that address. Now try it on ANOTHER MACHINE, not the same one, this machine must be internal; on the network. We will get around to getting you an EXTERNAL address, later. Anyway, enter that address in your browser, in another machine, and enter. Now go back to your server, the machine that the software is on, and OK any firewall popups; this is why you set your firewall to interactive mode. You have now setup an FTP file server. There will be more to come. |
