Thought this might be handy for some one.

This is sort of a follow on from the thread "Tivo and HDD Upgrades"

But I think being able to use a 2TB drive is worthy of a new thread.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the thread "Tivo HD Upgrade Instructions – using JMFS" over at TiVo Community:

http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/sh ... vo+hd+jmfs

Summary: there is a new TiVo MFS tool called "JMFS" that was developed for moving and upgrading to the new TiVo Premier models in the US. However, from version 1.04 it also has partial support for the TiVo HD like we have in Australia.

With JMFS it is possible to copy your current TiVo drive to a 2TG drive and expand to that size. Previously with the MFS/WinMFS tools drives over 1TB were limited to using only 1TB + the size of your original drive. Using JMFS it is possible to replace a 160 or 320 GB drive with a 2TB drive and even upgrade from a 1TB drive previously created by WinMFS onto a 2TB drive.

The first post in that thread at TiVo Community has clear instructions that need to be followed carefully to avoid problems.

To do the upgrade you need a computer with SATA – using USB to SATA adaptors when copying 1TB of data would take a very long time.

The tools you need are:

JMFS – http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/sh ... p?t=455968
WinMFS – http://www.mfslive.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=15

You will also need a WDidle Boot CD, if you are using a newer WD drive: http://www.sendspace.com/file/kccixj

Instructions on using WDidle and why are in the original "Drive Expansion and Drive Upgrade FAQ" thread – search for WDidle: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/sh ... ?p=5616160

I did the upgrade today from a 1TB drive a created with WinMFS back in 2008. Decided on a WD20EURS, so I had to use WDidle to change the spin down timeout. My previous drive was WD10EVCS so after its 3 trouble-free years, I decided on WD again. YMMV. Many are using the Hitachi Cinemastar these days, but I still remember my three dead IBM Deskstars from 10 years ago! The copy of 1TB of data with JMFS took around 6-8 hours (not sure how long exactly – I went out and let it do its thing). The way JMFS works is that it copies the drive bit-for-bit – this my be why it works when WinMFS doesn't. Even with an empty 1TB drive, it will still take 6 or so hours. The expand of the 2TB drive takes seconds, and just had to boot to Windows to use WinMFS to "supersize" the drive. Put the new drive in my TiVo and after the usual painfully long boot, all seems perfect, and the new space is there. I am filling it now with HD recordings to confirm all is well.

As said before, complete instructions I followed are in this thread: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/sh ... vo+hd+jmfs

I will report back if I have any problems or in a few weeks if nothing goes wrong :-). If anything does go wrong I still have the old 1TB to put back in, so not much lost – besides $83 for the drive, which I am sure I can find another use for!

PS: For those new to upgrading a TiVo, this guide is a great place for an overview:
