Davo I am getting very close to going to the dark side and building a 1/32 pre 70's scalextric layout, watching a huge lot of cars in UK, trying to get a feel for prices of the old cars

Got a reply from

Elyse Niblett
AFX Racing

Our brand new Digital Lap Counter will be released this winter 2013. It snaps on to any current AFX track and counts every lap, every time. Made for two lanes, this digital masterpiece can easily be hooked up to your four lane track with space made for a straightaway on all lanes. It counts up to 99 laps and has a five second delayed start. If that’s not good enough, it also penalizes racers who jump the start by docking them one lap. Voltage isn’t a problem with this lap counter because it runs on AA batteries, just snap on and race. Fitting under a straight lane, it detects the car’s magnets with a highly sensitive electronic Hall effect sensor. This is MUCH more reliable than a reed switch, by the way, which is what was always used before. The Hall sensor is more expensive but will not miss a lap, like reed switches can.

The new AFX cars have strong magnets! If any of you are thinking of buying one of these lap counters I'd suggest waiting until the US guys get to test them first. I am not convinced that it will work on say a Magnatraction car.

Got another reply about the Counter and Mag cars.

Quote

Hello Tomo,

According to my specialist, the magna traction magnets “should” be strong enough. The hall sensors that the lap counter uses are the most sensitive ones available. However, we can’t guarantee it because older cars were not tested and sometimes their magnets lose some or much of their strength. Of all the Lap counters available I’d say you’d have the best chance using your magna traction cars with ours, however, whether they’ll work all the time every time is debatable depending on the age of the cars and how much use they’ve had.

Hope this helps!

"Should"??? May be??? Like I said. Wait for the guys in the US test them out! I admit I know nothing about "Hall" sensors? I have used light sensors because they don't reply on magnets like "Reed" sensors. I do hope these work with older chassis? Good to see AFX Racing took the time to answer you Tomo!
